Alpha ESS home battery review: specs, warranty and downsides
The answer first: Alpha ESS SMILE-G3 batteries come in 9.3 or 9.6 kWh modules, up to about 56–57 kWh, and are on the CEC list to 31 Dec 2027 [SB-S074, C]. The Australian warranty runs 10 years to 70% of usable capacity, but ends early at 3.12 MWh per usable kWh, and its October 2024 terms don't name the 9.3S module [SB-S210, C]. What it is
A hybrid system: SMILE-G3 inverter plus battery modules. The S5 and B5 are single phase with a 5 kW inverter; T5/T10 (5/10 kW) and T15/T20 (15/20 kW) are three phase [SB-S204, C]. The B5 datasheet lists a 5,000 VA backup port with "Backup UPS" [SB-S211, C].
| Spec | Alpha ESS |

What the federal discount is worth. Our arithmetic, not a quote: installs from May to December 2026 earn 6.8 STCs per usable kWh up to 14 kWh, then 60% of that to 28 kWh and 15% to 50 kWh [SB-S036, SB-S001, C]. STCs last traded at $39.65 (30 Oct 2026); installers pass on a bit less [SB-S095, C]. The factor drops to 5.7 for installs from January 2027 [SB-S036, C]. The discount is set by the installation date [SB-S004, C]. It needs a CEC-listed, VPP-capable battery installed with solar by an SAA battery-endorsed installer [SB-S003, C]. The STC price moves, so your installer's figure will differ. Official rules: cer.gov.au and dcceew.gov.au. 1 module (9.3 kWh): 63 STCs, about $2,498. 2 modules (18.6 kWh): 113 STCs, about $4,480 [SB-S036, SB-S001, SB-S095, E].
Downsides
- Big steps: you go from 9.3 to 18.6 kWh, with nothing in between [SB-S074, E].
- Throughput cap: 3.12 MWh per usable kWh is about 3,100 full cycles before the warranty ends [SB-S210, E]. The 9.3S module isn't named in the Oct 2024 terms, and an installer says newer terms dated 30 Oct 2024 exist that we haven't read [SB-S210, C].
- No battery round-trip figure on the AU page or the datasheets we hold [SB-S058, SB-S211, C].
Who it's not for
Alpha ESS is not for you if:
- you need about 12–14 kWh and don't want to pay for 18.6 [SB-S074, E].
- your quote is for 9.3S modules and the installer can't show warranty terms that name them [SB-S210, E].
It suits bigger homes wanting a system listed through 2027 [SB-S074, C].
Ask your installer
- The current warranty document, and whether it names your module (9.3S or 10.1P) [SB-S210].
- Which module (9.3S or 10.1P) and its usable kWh on the CEC list [SB-S074].
- What backup is included, its kVA, and its cost [SB-S211].
Next step: get quotes
Ask at least two accredited installers for a written quote that shows the model, usable kWh and the certificate count.
Head to head: we compare Alpha ESS with FoxESS on step size, three-phase models and warranty caps. Six brands' usable kWh and warranty are in the brand comparison table.
Rules checked 3 November 2026. Next scheduled check: before 1 January 2027 (STC step-down), and monthly for WA and NSW.
