Solar battery rebate in Australia
The federal battery discount takes about 30% off an installed battery. Your installer takes it off the quote [SB-S001, SB-S003, C].
On 1 January 2027 it gets smaller. It doesn't end [SB-S036, SB-S083, C].
We haven't installed or used these batteries ourselves. This page is research from government pages, manufacturer documents and installer price lists, each linked and dated.
What it's worth in dollars
| Usable kWh | Installed by 31 Dec 2026 | Installed from 1 Jan 2027 |
|---|---|---|
| 10 | 68 certificates ≈ $2,696 | 57 ≈ $2,260 |
| 20 | 119 ≈ $4,718 | 100 ≈ $3,965 |
Working (E): 6.8 then 5.7 certificates per usable kWh [SB-S036]. Full rate on the first 14 kWh, 60% from 14 to 28 kWh, 15% from 28 to 50 kWh [SB-S001]. 20 kWh in Dec: 14×6.8 + 6×6.8×0.6 = 119. Dollars use the last certificate trade, $39.65 on 30 October 2026 [SB-S095, C]. We've rounded down to whole certificates (MISSING: the regulator's rounding rule).
Your installer sets what each certificate is worth to you. That's why two quotes can show different discounts for the same battery [SB-S095, E].
How it works
- No form to fill in. Your installer claims the certificates and cuts your price [SB-S001, SB-S003, C].
- Your install date sets the rate, not the day you sign [SB-S004, C].
- Batteries of 5 to 100 kWh qualify. Only the first 50 kWh usable earns certificates [SB-S002, SB-S003, C].
- The rate falls every six months: 5.2 in late 2027, down to 2.1 in late 2030 [SB-S001, C]. The scheme runs to the end of 2030 [SB-S002, C].
- Don't rush a bad install to beat a change. The regulator warns against it [SB-S004, C].
Who can't get it
- No solar panels: the battery must go in with solar, new or existing [SB-S003, C].
- A battery not on the Clean Energy Council approved list [SB-S003, SB-S026, C].
- An installer without Solar Accreditation Australia battery accreditation. Check here [SB-S003, SB-S063, C].
- A second battery claim at the same property [SB-S003, C].
- Moving it out early: it must stay until the warranty ends or the end of 2030, whichever is later [SB-S003, C].

In WA, one Perth installer says its 27 kWh solar-and-battery package gets $6,810 off from the WA and federal rebates together (as at 22 Oct 2026) [SB-S093, C].
Will it pay for itself?
- Yearly saving ≈ kWh the battery covers each evening × 365 × (your peak rate − your feed-in rate) (E).
- Payback years = what you pay after discounts ÷ yearly saving (E).
- Check the warranty: most batteries we cover promise 70% of usable storage at 10 years, or a throughput cap, whichever comes first [SB-S053, SB-S055, SB-S057, SB-S059, C]. If payback is past 10 years, think twice (E).

A seller must give you payback, sizing and warranty details before you sign [SB-S082, C].
