Best solar battery for Adelaide and South Australia
How this site makes money. We don't earn money from any links on this site yet. If that changes, we'll update this notice first. We don't compare every battery, installer or energy plan in the market. How we make money
Short answer: in SA right now you get the federal discount and nothing from the state. SA's Home Battery Scheme is closed to new applications [SB-S212, C], and the REPS VPP incentive's 2026 funding ran out in May for most households, with more expected from the start of 2027 [SB-S214, SB-S217, C]. So the best battery for an Adelaide home is the one sized to your evening use, on the right inverter, listed on your install date, plus a VPP deal if it pays you.
What you can get in SA (as at 3 November 2026)
- Federal discount: about 30% via STCs, for a battery installed with solar, 5–100 kWh, on the CEC list, by an accredited installer [SB-S001, SB-S003, C].
- SA Home Battery Scheme: closed; "new applications are not being accepted" [SB-S212, C].
- REPS VPP incentive: for the rest of 2026 only the priority group (pensioners, health care card holders, and tenants paying up to $500 a week) can get it: up to $1,030 for 13 kWh, max $2,050 [SB-S214, C]. Paid after you connect to a VPP [SB-S217, C].
- SA VPP (government): only for eligible SA Housing Trust tenants; AGL runs it [SB-S213, C].
- Retailer VPPs: AGL pays a $200 welcome credit, $80 a year in bill credits and $1 per kWh in VPP events [SB-S215, C]. Origin Battery Lite pays a $200 sign-up credit and $1 per kWh sent to the grid in events, up to 200 a year; it needs at least 5 kW of solar [SB-S216, C]. Both pages are undated, so check the current offer with the retailer.
- Compare power plans: Energy Made Easy works in SA [SB-S048, C].
What the federal discount is worth
Our arithmetic, not a quote: installs from May to December 2026 earn 6.8 STCs per usable kWh up to 14 kWh, then 60% of that to 28 kWh and 15% to 50 kWh [SB-S036, SB-S001, C]. STCs last traded at $39.65 (30 Oct 2026); installers pass on a bit less [SB-S095, C]. The factor drops to 5.7 for installs from January 2027 [SB-S036, C]. The discount is set by the installation date [SB-S004, C]. It needs a CEC-listed, VPP-capable battery installed with solar by an SAA battery-endorsed installer [SB-S003, C]. The STC price moves, so your installer's figure will differ. Official rules: cer.gov.au and dcceew.gov.au.
10 kWh usable: 68 STCs, about $2,696. 13.5 kWh: 91 STCs, about $3,608 [SB-S036, SB-S001, SB-S095, E].
How to choose, in four checks
- Size to your evenings. If most use is 4–10 pm, size the battery near that use, not bigger: discount per kWh drops after 14 kWh [SB-S001, C].
- Your inverter. DC batteries like Sungrow SBR need the brand's hybrid inverter [SB-S137, E]; Powerwall 3 has its own solar inverter [SB-S052, C].
- The listing date. Some models' CEC listings end in December 2026 [SB-S071, SB-S073, C].
- Ask whether a VPP pays more than self-use. A $1 per kWh event payment beats your evening tariff only on event days; ask each retailer how many events it runs [SB-S215, SB-S216, E].
Prices
