Tesla Powerwall 3 home battery review: prices, specs and downsides

How this site makes money. We don't earn money from any links on this site yet. If that changes, we'll update this notice first. We don't compare every battery, installer or energy plan in the market. How we make money

The answer first: One Canberra installer lists Powerwall 3 at $10,633–$12,633 after the federal discount, single phase with solar, backup gateway included, as at September 2026 [SB-S061, C]. You get 13.5 kWh usable and a built-in solar inverter [SB-S052, C]. It suits a home that wants one box with backup; it's dear per kWh and comes in one size [SB-S061, SB-S052, E].

What the federal discount is worth. Our arithmetic, not a quote: installs from May to December 2026 earn 6.8 STCs per usable kWh up to 14 kWh, then 60% of that to 28 kWh and 15% to 50 kWh [SB-S036, SB-S001, C]. STCs last traded at $39.65 (30 Oct 2026); installers pass on a bit less [SB-S095, C]. The factor drops to 5.7 for installs from January 2027 [SB-S036, C]. The discount is set by the installation date [SB-S004, C]. It needs a CEC-listed, VPP-capable battery installed with solar by an SAA battery-endorsed installer [SB-S003, C]. The STC price moves, so your installer's figure will differ. Official rules: cer.gov.au and dcceew.gov.au. One Powerwall 3 (13.5 kWh): 91 STCs, about $3,608. With one Expansion (27 kWh): 148 STCs, about $5,868 [SB-S036, SB-S001, SB-S095, E].

Downsides

  • One size per unit: storage comes in 13.5 kWh blocks [SB-S052, C].
  • Dearest per kWh of the dated prices we hold; Sigenergy's dated list works out near $460 per kWh before backup [SB-S092, E].
  • The 37.8 MWh cap applies to use outside self-use, time-based control and backup [SB-S053, C]; ask how your VPP use counts.

Who it's not for

Tesla Powerwall 3 is not for you if:

  • you only need 6–10 kWh [SB-S052, E].
  • price per kWh matters most to you [SB-S061, SB-S052, E].
  • you want to choose and keep a separate solar inverter: Powerwall 3 brings its own [SB-S052, E].

It suits homes with solar that want backup in one price [SB-S052, SB-S061, C].

Ask your installer

  1. Is the Backup Gateway 2 in the price, and which circuits are on backup [SB-S061]?
  2. Which power setting (5, 10 or 11.04 kW) the quote assumes [SB-S052].
  3. The STC count and the install date it assumes [SB-S004].

Next step: get quotes

Ask at least two accredited installers for a written quote that shows the model, usable kWh and the certificate count.

Head to head: Powerwall measured against Sungrow · how the Powerwall and Sigenergy line up. The discount is set by install date, not contract date: how the install date sets the discount [SB-S004, C].

Rules checked 3 November 2026. Next scheduled check: before 1 January 2027 (STC step-down), and monthly for WA and NSW.
