Tesla Powerwall vs Sungrow: which battery suits your home?

How this site makes money. We don't earn money from any links on this site yet. If that changes, we'll update this notice first. We don't compare every battery, installer or energy plan in the market. How we make money

Short answer: Powerwall 3 is a single 13.5 kWh unit that brings its own solar inverter and works with solar you already have [SB-S052, E]. Sungrow SBR is a stack you build from 3.2 kWh modules, and it needs a Sungrow hybrid inverter [SB-S051, C]. Powerwall suits an existing solar home that wants one box; Sungrow suits a Sungrow inverter home or a smaller budget size [SB-S052, SB-S137, E].

Discount at typical sizes (our arithmetic, not a quote)

Powerwall 3: 91 STCs, about $3,608. Sungrow SBR128 (12.8 kWh): 87 STCs, about $3,450 [SB-S036, SB-S095, E]. The discount is set by the day the battery goes in, not the day you sign, so check the rules before you get quotes [SB-S004, C]. The factor drops to 5.7 for installs from January 2027 [SB-S036, C]. The discount is set by the installation date [SB-S004, C]. It needs a CEC-listed, VPP-capable battery installed with solar by an SAA battery-endorsed installer [SB-S003, C]. The STC price moves, so your installer's figure will differ. Official rules: cer.gov.au and dcceew.gov.au.

Who each one suits

Powerwall 3 suits you if your solar inverter is fine and you want backup included in one price [SB-S052, SB-S061, C].

Powerwall 3 is not for you if you only need 6–10 kWh: you can't buy a smaller Powerwall 3 [SB-S052, E].

Sungrow suits you if you already run a Sungrow hybrid inverter [SB-S051, C].

Sungrow is not for you if your install is in 2027 and the model's listing hasn't been renewed: ask to see it [SB-S071, E].

More

In NSW the VPP incentive stacks with the federal discount [SB-S007, C]: what NSW buyers get. If your second quote is Sigenergy, its 8.76 kWh modules change the maths: Sungrow or Sigenergy and Tesla against Sigenergy [SB-S060, C]. FoxESS has a dated Sydney list, unlike Sungrow SBR: the FoxESS comparison with Sungrow [SB-S099, C]. Without panels there's no federal discount [SB-S003, C]; we cover what a battery alone can do if you have no panels yet.

Ask your installer, in writing

  1. The exact model on the CEC list, usable kWh and listing end date [SB-S026, SB-S071, C].
  2. STC count and the install date it assumes [SB-S004, C].
  3. What stays on in a blackout, and its cost.
  4. Warranty years, 70% figure, throughput cap.

Rules checked 3 November 2026. Next scheduled check: before 1 January 2027 (STC step-down), and monthly for WA and NSW.
