FoxESS vs Sungrow: which battery suits your home?

How this site makes money. We don't earn money from any links on this site yet. If that changes, we'll update this notice first. We don't compare every battery, installer or energy plan in the market. How we make money

Short answer: both are modular stacks with a 10-year warranty that ends at 70% or a throughput cap [SB-S055, SB-S050, C]. FoxESS goes bigger per stack (up to 41.93 kWh) and has a dated price list from Solar National, a Sydney installer (as at July 2026); Sungrow comes in smaller steps (from 6.4 kWh) but we found no dated price for its common SBR sizes [SB-S054, SB-S137, SB-S099, SB-S098]. Both need their own brand's hybrid inverter [SB-S099, SB-S054, E].

Two things to check on a FoxESS quote

  • Which stack is it? The Sydney list says 14.4 kWh. That looks like a nominal figure for 3 modules (about 13.98 kWh usable), but the page doesn't say, so ask [SB-S099, SB-S054, E].
  • Is the price still current? It's dated July 2026. The discount is set by the install date, so the after-discount figure may have moved [SB-S004, C].

Every EQ4800 size and the dated list: FoxESS sizes and prices.

Two things to check on a Sungrow quote

  • The listing date. The SBR listing we read ends 30 December 2026 [SB-S071, C]. For an install in 2027, ask to see the current listing.
  • No published price for SBR sizes. Installer quotes vary, so get at least two in writing.

Discount at typical sizes (our arithmetic, not a quote)

6.8 STCs per usable kWh to 14 kWh, 60% to 28 kWh, May–Dec 2026 installs [SB-S036, SB-S001, C]; last trade $39.65 [SB-S095, C]. The factor drops to 5.7 for installs from January 2027 [SB-S036, C]. The discount is set by the installation date [SB-S004, C]. It needs a CEC-listed, VPP-capable battery installed with solar by an SAA battery-endorsed installer [SB-S003, C]. The STC price moves, so your installer's figure will differ. Official rules: cer.gov.au and dcceew.gov.au.

  • FoxESS EQ4800-L3 (13.98 kWh): 95 STCs, about $3,767 [SB-S036, SB-S001, SB-S095, E].
  • Sungrow SBR128 (12.8 kWh): 87 STCs, about $3,450 [SB-S036, SB-S001, SB-S095, E].

Who each one suits

FoxESS suits you if you want a big stack (20 kWh+) for less per kWh, on a new Fox hybrid inverter [SB-S054, SB-S099, C/E].

FoxESS is not for you if you want a brand with a long Australian track record; ask your installer about local support (support details MISSING).

Sungrow suits you if you already have a Sungrow hybrid inverter, or want to start small [SB-S137, C].

Sungrow is not for you if you want a published, dated price before you call anyone [SB-S098].

Other comparisons

Sigenergy is the other brand here with a full dated price list [SB-S092, C]: how Sigenergy compares with Sungrow and the Tesla and modular-stack comparison. If you'd rather have one 13.5 kWh unit with backup in the price, see how Sungrow compares with the Powerwall [SB-S052, SB-S061, C]. In Queensland there's no state rebate open [SB-S044, C]; before you book, use the Brisbane installer checklist.

Ask your installer, in writing

  1. The exact model on the CEC approved list, its usable kWh and listing end date [SB-S026, SB-S071, C].
  2. How many STCs the quote assumes, and for which install date [SB-S004, C].
  3. What stays on in a blackout, and the line-item cost of backup.
  4. Warranty years, the 70% figure and the throughput cap.

Rules checked 3 November 2026. Next scheduled check: before 1 January 2027 (STC step-down), and monthly for WA and NSW.
