Sigenergy vs Sungrow: which battery suits your home?

How this site makes money. We don't earn money from any links on this site yet. If that changes, we'll update this notice first. We don't compare every battery, installer or energy plan in the market. How we make money

Short answer: both are modular stacks with a 10-year warranty that ends at 70% capacity or a throughput cap [SB-S059, SB-S050, C]. Sungrow comes in smaller 3.2 kWh steps and needs a Sungrow hybrid inverter; Sigenergy comes in 8.76 kWh steps on its own inverter [SB-S051, SB-S060, C]. We hold a full dated Sigenergy price list but only one dated Sungrow package, so we can't yet compare prices size for size [SB-S092, SB-S098]. Installer quotes for Sungrow vary, so get at least two in writing.

The listing date matters for Sungrow

The SBR listing we read ends on 30 December 2026 [SB-S071, C]. The discount depends on the product being listed on the day it's installed [SB-S003, C]. If your install is booked for January 2027 or later, ask the installer to show the model's current listing first [SB-S071, SB-S003, E].

SBR and SBH steps and their listing end dates are on Sungrow sizes and listing dates.

What the federal discount is worth (our arithmetic, not a quote)

6.8 STCs per usable kWh to 14 kWh, then 60% to 28 kWh, for installs May–Dec 2026 [SB-S036, SB-S001, C]; last trade $39.65 [SB-S095, C]. The factor drops to 5.7 for installs from January 2027 [SB-S036, C]. The discount is set by the installation date [SB-S004, C]. It needs a CEC-listed, VPP-capable battery installed with solar by an SAA battery-endorsed installer [SB-S003, C]. The STC price moves, so your installer's figure will differ. Official rules: cer.gov.au and dcceew.gov.au.

  • Sigenergy 2 modules (17.52 kWh): 109 STCs, about $4,322 [SB-S036, SB-S001, SB-S095, E].
  • Sungrow SBR128 (12.8 kWh): 87 STCs, about $3,450 [SB-S036, SB-S001, SB-S095, E].

For every Sigenergy size and extra, see Sigenergy pricing in Australia. The certificate count depends on your install date and usable kWh, which makes the rebate rules worth reading before you compare [SB-S004, C].

Who each one suits

Sigenergy suits you if you want battery and inverter from one maker and need 17 kWh or more [SB-S060, SB-S092, C].

Sigenergy is not for you if you need under 9 kWh: the smallest step is one 8.76 kWh module [SB-S060, E].

Sungrow suits you if you already have a Sungrow hybrid inverter, or want a small battery you can grow 3.2 kWh at a time [SB-S051, C].

Sungrow is not for you if you want a dated, published price before you call anyone: we found one package only [SB-S098].

State extras

In NSW, the VPP incentive stacks with the federal discount; Sydney prices and that VPP payment are covered on our Sydney page if you're in NSW [SB-S007, C]. WA's scheme needs a VPP and pays up to $1,300 (Synergy) or $3,800 (Horizon Power) [SB-S008, C]; Perth prices with that rebate are on our Perth page if you live in WA.

Without solar panels there's no federal discount [SB-S003, C]; a grid-only battery can still shift cheap power, and we explain the costs if you don't have panels yet.

Other comparisons

Want one unit with backup in the price? Powerwall 3 is 13.5 kWh with its gateway included on the dated list we hold [SB-S052, SB-S061, C]: Sigenergy against the Powerwall and Powerwall against Sungrow. FoxESS goes to 41.93 kWh per stack and has a dated Sydney list [SB-S054, SB-S099, C]: how FoxESS stacks up to Sungrow. Specs for all six brands: all the batteries we cover.

Ask your installer, in writing

  1. The exact model on the CEC approved list, its usable kWh, and its listing end date [SB-S026, SB-S071, C].
  2. How many STCs the quote assumes, and for which install date [SB-S004, C].
  3. What stays on in a blackout, and the line-item cost of backup.
  4. Warranty years, the 70% figure and the throughput cap.

Rules checked 3 November 2026. Next scheduled check: before 1 January 2027 (STC step-down), and monthly for WA and NSW.
