Sungrow vs Alpha ESS: which battery suits your home?

How this site makes money. We don't earn money from any links on this site yet. If that changes, we'll update this notice first. We don't compare every battery, installer or energy plan in the market. How we make money

Short answer: Sungrow SBR grows in 3.2 kWh steps; Alpha ESS SMILE-G3 grows in 9.3 or 9.6 kWh steps and goes up to about 55–57 kWh [SB-S137, SB-S074, C]. Both carry a 10-year warranty [SB-S050, SB-S058, C]. We found no dated installer price for either at common sizes, so get quotes from at least two installers.

The biggest difference: step size

If you need about 13 kWh, Sungrow can get close in 3.2 kWh steps (12.8 kWh), while Alpha ESS jumps from 9.3 to 18.6 kWh [SB-S137, SB-S074, E]. Buying more than you'll use every evening costs money and earns no more discount past 14 kWh at the full rate [SB-S001, C]. How module count changes a real price list is shown on our Sigenergy page: how module count changes the total.

Each SMILE-G3 module and its listing date: Alpha ESS module sizes.

Discount at typical sizes (our arithmetic, not a quote)

  • Sungrow SBR128 (12.8 kWh): 87 STCs, about $3,450 [SB-S036, SB-S095, E]. The factor drops to 5.7 for installs from January 2027 [SB-S036, C]. The discount is set by the installation date [SB-S004, C]. It needs a CEC-listed, VPP-capable battery installed with solar by an SAA battery-endorsed installer [SB-S003, C]. The STC price moves, so your installer's figure will differ. Official rules: cer.gov.au and dcceew.gov.au.
  • Alpha ESS 1 module (9.3 kWh): 63 STCs, about $2,498; 2 modules (18.6 kWh): 113 STCs, about $4,480 [SB-S036, SB-S001, SB-S095, E].

Who each one suits

Sungrow suits you if you have a Sungrow hybrid inverter, or want to fine-tune the size [SB-S137, C].

Sungrow is not for you if your install is in 2027 and the SBR listing (to 30 Dec 2026) hasn't been renewed [SB-S071, E].

Alpha ESS suits you if you want a bigger system that's listed through 2027 [SB-S074, C].

Alpha ESS is not for you if your quote is for 9.3S modules and the installer can't show warranty terms that name them [SB-S210, E].

Other comparisons

Sungrow against others: FoxESS or Sungrow, BYD or Sungrow, the Tesla match-up, and the Sigenergy and Sungrow page. Powerwall against Sigenergy is covered in the Powerwall and Sigenergy page. In WA, the state scheme pays up to $1,300 (Synergy) or $3,800 (Horizon Power) with a VPP [SB-S008, C]; Perth prices with that rebate are on our Perth page if you're in Western Australia.

If Sungrow is ahead on your list, read about Sungrow's battery range on its own, including SBR in 3.2 kWh steps and SBH in 5 kWh steps [SB-S137, SB-S138, C].

Ask your installer, in writing

  1. The exact model on the CEC approved list, its usable kWh and listing end date [SB-S026, SB-S071, C].
  2. How many STCs the quote assumes, and for which install date [SB-S004, C].
  3. What stays on in a blackout, and the line-item cost of backup.
  4. Warranty years, the 70% figure and the throughput cap.

Rules checked 3 November 2026. Next scheduled check: before 1 January 2027 (STC step-down), and monthly for WA and NSW.
